Please NEVER twist, move, or touch your new piercing!!

Disturbance of jewelry can only cause irritation. Jewelry (inorganic material) cannot “stick” to skin. If that were true, replacement hips and knees would make it so you could never walk again. Touching of a new piercing is how best to cause infection. Intentionally disturbing a foreign object (jewelry) in a wound (piercing) is how best to prevent healing and cause scar tissue.

As long as you NEVER touch your healing piercing, you will have no trouble with bacterial infection.

We suggest sterile saline solution to care for your new piercing.

Neilmed piercing aftercare spray is the saline that we sell and recommend.

Spray the saline solution directly onto the piercing and air dry once or twice daily. If skin becomes dry/ashy or noticeably tight, use the saline less often.

Use the saline for two months or until the can runs out, whichever comes first.

NEVER USE: Petroleum based products during healing. Petroleum based products will deprive oxygen and impede the healing process.

NEVER USE: Caustic chemicals like rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or “ear care solution” (benzalkonium chloride). These products are too strong and will easily irritate your skin and new piercing. Caustic chemicals work against healthy skin cell formation.

Some swelling, redness and tenderness is normal during the initial stage of the healing process. If you ever experience redness surrounding the piercing for 24 hours, PLEASE contact us so we can help. CONTACT US FIRST!! It is always best to ask your piercer about any complications related to piercings. Complications for healing piercings are widely misunderstood. YOUR PIERCER WILL BE ABLE TO HELP YOU AVOID MISINFORMATION.

BE WAY MORE CAREFUL THAN NORMAL WITH: Towels, combs, hair, hats, pulling shirts on/off, helmets, hugs, etc. Accidents happen and do not cause risk of infection, but the less they happen, the better.

We ALWAYS recommend having a professional piercer change your jewelry for you the first time. It is SO important to make sure that your piercing is properly healed and ready for a change of jewelry. Body jewelry comes in many different sizes. After a piercing is fully healed, the continued health of your piercing depends on jewelry that fits correctly.

A guide for people who sleep

Most people sleep on their side. Inadvertently resting the weight of the head on the ear during sleep chronically can press the edge of the disc back against the adjacent skin behind the ear. This can lead to a pressure sore. When a pressure sore is continually exposed to the event that caused it, this can lead to “the bump”. This bump is called a granuloma. A temporary over abundance of white blood cells. A granuloma is NOT an infection, abscess, or a keloid, but it is often mistaken for any of the three.

Protecting the ear consistently during sleep will allow a granuloma to go away. We have seen very good results when people try:

Using a squishmallow instead of a pillow. Place the squishmallow above the ear lobe. This will prevent the weight of the head from compressing the earlobe against the neck.

If the squishmallow doesn’t work, try this ear guard pillow. In order to be effective, it HAS to have an adjustable strap. this will ensure that the pillow doesn’t come off during sleep.

Guidelines for swimming

Although it is possible to get a bacterial infection from swimming, we have never once seen one.
